Tyto Online provides student-driven Next Generation Science learning — in a video game!
The student experience focuses on building science and engineering practices with exploratory learning, such as building ecosystems to learn ecology or exploring coral bleaching as an anchoring phenomena to understand the impact of climate change. It covers middle school life and earth science, right now with four Modules: Cells to Organisms, Growth & Genetics, Ecosystems, and Weather & Climate.
Teachers can search and assign standards-aligned content and view student performance from a dashboard. The assessment data focuses on key insights for where students are struggling to help them differentiate and personalize instruction. The content can be used to introduce in a student-driven, inquiry-based approach, or for extension and exploration of concepts.
Tyto Online is unique as we focus on helping students build their science and engineering practices, rather than simply presenting content or review information. They are engaging with replicated authentic problems, taking on the acts and behaviors of a real scientist.
Our product is backed with grant support from the National Science Foundation and Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences, and received a 2018 Top Pick for Learning from Common Sense Education.
(Editor's note: Tyto Online is designed for Chromebooks as well as Mac and PC. Our little website is getting an update soon and our categories will be updated as well!)

I am a biochemist, making games to teach the invisible bits of cell biology.
I really feel like I am on an adventure in this game. I love the interaction with the scientists... I was quickly involved in an investigation of plant health that feels like a real experiment, that honestly makes me feel like I am back in the lab.
This game is a beautiful fusion of a big beautiful world and a bunch of real world kinds of problems to solve. And you get your own apartment with a crazy space view.
The graphics have lately been lowered in resolution so that the game plays on Chromebooks. However, this game is under development by a fantastic team and soon the graphics will be improved for people on computers that can handle it.
If you teach biology or introduction to science I really recommend this game!
