I play a lot of board games, and Cycles is a unique blend of table-top-like sort of gameplay and the card games I grew up playing with my family. There are elements of Rummy and similar games (card collection, taking from the discard pile, stealing other player's stacks), which makes the game fast-paced and exciting. But each type of card that you collect has an effect on gameplay (allowing you to draw extra cards, protecting your cards from being stolen, allowing you more freedom to take from the discard pile). This makes Cycles much more fun, exciting, and interesting than most card games.
For school-age kids, the science learning is passive, so they're absorbing these biology concepts without even realizing they're doing it. For most kids, that's the best way for them to learn! The beautiful art on the cards reinforces those lessons by helping you visualize those concepts in a way that is both scientifically accurate and visually striking. I really enjoy playing Cycles, which is (for me) the most important part of any STEM game.
